My time at Bluestem has taught me a lot about myself. I really have figured out what I like and don’t like in poetry. Thankfully, all of the things I have learned have helped me become a better poet.
One of my biggest realizations is that you can tell when someone is trying too hard. There is just a sense of falseness that is easily detectable when someone is trying too hard to sound poetic. The soul is drained out of your words when you are constantly right-clicking to check the thesaurus. This new-found ability to recognize falseness has allowed me to add more soul into my own work. I am always trying to reach deep within what I know so I can write with a lot of soul.
The old saying “Write what you know” is so very true.
Because everything else is just bullshit.
