Dreaming of Desert

Confronted with mortality,
sunken: fragile web of vines
and veins upon veins plaited
with alluvial rose in the sand
of the desert we all refer to
with dry mouths, the feared creation
of more than what is. The assimilation
of savage dialogue, of razor mountain
ranges blown to smithereens.
Count the scattered cells on cratered parkway.
The bodega serving soup with marrow.
The marrow in the soup. Tail and ears
of landmine cows. Distraction.
Grinding teeth, declining youth.
The impossible task of comfort.
A path slightly skewed, interrupted
by blinding panes of sand.
